The Back-to-School Health Check Most Parents Forget

As a parent, your mind is likely running at 100 miles an hour, and the capacity to remember everything is something that becomes a daily challenge.

There are certainly forgotten back-to-school health checks that parents will neglect, not on purpose but by simply not thinking about getting them done sooner.

Let’s take a look at some of the health checks that most parents tend to forget and neglect when it comes to child health.

Eye examinations matter

One of the main, forgotten health checks that parents don’t think to do when it comes to their children is eye examinations. There are a lot of children out there with undetected vision issues who struggle to see the whiteboard or perhaps experience headaches as a result of trying to learn with limited vision.

That’s why it’s important to attend optometrist eye testing to keep on top of the family’s health when it comes to vision. It’s one of those essential health check-ups that, if neglected, could get worse but also cause a safety hazard for young ones who don’t realise that their vision might not be perfect.

Preventative care with dental check-ups

Dental check-ups are incredibly important, even with little ones whose milk teeth haven’t yet dropped out. Regular dental check-ups are often overlooked during the back-to-school rush, which is why it’s good to be proactive in getting your children’s teeth checked.

It’s also crucial that you’re getting your own teeth checked, and that’s not always the case for every parent, either. You’ll want to be their role model when it comes to health and dental health, specifically.

Immunization updates

Ensuring vaccinations are up-to-date is something that’s incredibly important in order to stop the spread of illnesses, like the mumps and measles.

It’s not just an important health update for your little one, but it’s also protecting others from deadly and life-threatening viruses, too.

Mental and emotional wellness

Returning to school is something that can trigger a lot of anxiety, so it’s something that parents should check for. That can be hard in children who don’t always communicate their feelings, but if you have an open attitude towards speaking up about your mental health, they may feel more inclined to do so, going forward.

Look out for the signs of worry, whether it be behavioural changes, for example or disruption to sleep, perhaps.

Physical check-ups

It’s good to ensure all sports physicals are completed and that your child is checked over regularly, whether they do sports or not. A bodily health MOT is always useful to help spot underlying problems that don’t often come with symptoms.

Your child’s health is one of upmost importance, and it’s likely something you put before your own health. However, check-ups can be forgotten, especially when time flies by. With that being said, set calendar reminders to make sure every healthcare appointment is being booked in and your child’s health is always being monitored carefully.
