Small Dining Space? No Problem! 3 Tips For Decorating An Eating Area With Style

When you’re living with a small dining space, the idea of sharing a wholesome and hearty family meal becomes something more cramped and crammed in!

You can’t even use a knife and fork without elbowing the person sitting next to you! There’s just nothing relaxing about the experience at all!

But a small dining area doesn’t have to be a difficult zone in your home. There are ways to make use of the space without compromising on any functionality or your carefully curated aesthetic!

And that’s what we’re here to help with. Check out the tips below to go the extra mile in making your small dining space feel like the most cosy area of all.

Mind Your Head! Use Hooks and High Shelves

When your dining room is more of a nook and cranny than anything else, you can’t have the shelves hung up on the wall in the usual place.

That’ll make trying to sit down and eat a lot more cramped than it should be, especially if someone has to sit pressed close to the wall. And when diners stand up, there’s every chance they’ll bang their heads!

With a space like this, it’s best to get rid of shelving that juts out more than four inches. But we recommend using hooks to keep things in place, as well as higher unit floating shelves that won’t come into contact with the top of anyone’s head!

Invest in a Collapsible Table

A small dining space needs a table that can adapt, and unfortunately, a standard dining table just won’t cut it here! Instead, it’s best to invest in something like a drop leaf dining table, where you can fold out the surface as and when you need it.

Otherwise, it can be dropped down and kept out of the way, and the table itself can be pushed closer to the wall and used as a sideboard. That gives you another surface to rest decor on without it being too much for the space.

Create a Natural Light Flow

Smaller spaces can be made to look and feel so much bigger when there’s plenty of natural light! As such, try to create a better natural light flow to the space, whether there’s a window nearby or not.

Make sure there’s nothing obscuring the light as it crosses the room, which may require opening up the space by taking out an interior wall. That’ll give you more room between the dining area and your kitchen and living room, which will help with the overall traffic flow of your home.

And if need be, use a mirror to bounce more natural light around the area; even small mirror collages work well here!

Hate how cramped your dining space feels? Let’s change it!

When you’ve got a small dining space that barely fits a table and chairs, a bit of manoeuvring is required! Use the tops above to re-design and re-orientate the space to what you really need.
