Staying active as a busy parent

Like a lot of parents I am quite bad at looking after myself. I make sure the children eat a healthy balanced diet, they exercise a LOT but me, not so much. A big factor in my lack of exercise is time. We are busy every day after school, I have a baby to look after in the daytime and weekends are filled with more children’s sporting activities, parties and catching up with friends. I could get up early and go for a run, but right now with late nights and waking in the night with Charlie, getting up early and having the energy to go for a run isn’t an easy option.

Before I had children I went to the gym every day over my lunch hour at work, I ran, lifted weights and even did an occasional spinning class. My gym kit has sadly remained mostly unworn ever since my first child came along. I thought once Charlie arrived I’d be out walking with him, but there just isn’t even time for that. My house is constantly messy, there are clothes everywhere and let’s not even think about the kitchen.

Perhaps I should just buy some walking shoes forget the state of the house and go for it? Or maybe a running buggy would help, then I can get Charlie off to sleep whilst exercising. I’m sure I’d feel much better if I did try to find the time and exercising would probably help me focus on work and everyday tasks more effectively.

My husband makes an effort to get out in his lunch break, even if it’s just for a walk. He was recently sent these great Salomon X Ultra LTR GTX Men’s Hiking Shoes from Millet Sports which have really spurred him into getting our more. They are Gore-Tex so suitable for everything from school runs, to winter wet walks and thanks to the EVA midsole are super comfortable on all terrains. He’s even planning a trip up Snowdon for us all, although hopefully when Charlie is a bit older!

I know I need to do something. I’m hoping summer might help as the children are at home anyway and will need entertaining, so perhaps we can go for a family run, play tennis or a bike ride. Keep your fingers crossed the weather stays fine for us!

Do you find the time to exercise? Do you exercise along or with friends or family?
