How to Renovate Your Hallway on a Budget

If your hallway currently gives off ‘forgotten corridor in an old mystery novel’ vibes, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Hallways tend to be the neglected middle children of home decor. You get to get creative when it comes to redecorating it, and you get to do it even if you are on a budget. For example, that pretty wallpaper you spotted at Harvey Norman doesn’t have to be what you buy because you can buy paint online and still give it a great look. You need to make sure that you turn a bland stretch of wall into a space that actually feels intentional. And you can do it without emptying your bank account or sacrificing your snack budget.

Paint truly is your superhero, and now that you can buy paint online, it makes it much easier to refresh your hallway. It’s affordable, it’s transformative, and it’s way easier than convincing your landlord to let you knock out a wall. Lighter shades make narrow halls look much bigger, while deeper colours bring cosy, moody vibes. You can even add a cheeky pop of colour on trim or doors. If you are feeling brave or caffeinated, try a two-tone wall or a simple geometric pattern.

Once you’ve painted the walls, and everything is dry. Make sure to consider your lighting. Hallways are notorious for being either blindingly bright or cave level dim. Neither is actually cute. Swap out the dated fixtures for something more modern and warm, like looking for budget friendly flush mounts, wall sconces, or LED strips. Warm bulbs are an instant glow up for a place that’s supposed to be quite welcoming. While you’re looking at lighting, look down at your feet. Flooring is the next thing you need to tackle on a budget. Nothing kills a hallway’s vibe like peeling vinyl or a carpet that looks like it’s seen some things. If replacing flooring isn’t in the budget, which is understandable, try a runner rug. It covers a multitude of sins and adds colour, texture and softness. Plus it’s renter friendly and easy to switch out when you inevitably get bored.

While we’re talking about texture, your walls will be craving some love. Gallery walls are an obvious go to, but they don’t have to look like quirky cafes unless that’s your vibe. You can mix framed art with personal photos, thrifted finds, or even DIY prints. If you want a cleaner look, try one long statement shelf with curated decor. Bonus points for plants here, too. Hallways appreciate greenery, they’ve just been too polite to ask.

Don’t forget your doors either. Hallways are usually packed with different doors to different rooms, and a cute doorknob or a fresh coat of paint can change the hallway’s mood. Matte black hardware is chic, brass is classy, and anything is better than the wobbly 1980s knobs that come with the house.

Renovating your hallway on a budget isn’t about spending big, but about spending smart and adding personality in small, strategic doses. Your hallway deserves to shine, and now it can.
