How To Be Organised In A Small Home

Published: Apr 13, 2026 by admin · This post may contain affiliate links or collaborative content.

Living in a small home certainly does have its benefits – it’s easier to clean, it tends to feel cosier, and you’re never too far from anything, for example. However, there are some issues as well, and staying organised is one of the biggest because there’s just not a lot of space to spread out, so it can all get quite messy quite quickly. With that in mind, here are some useful tips to find a system that works so you can stay organised in a small home.

Be Honest About What You Actually Use

The starting point is usually going to be thinking about what you really need and use, and although it’s important, it’s not always very easy to do. In a smaller space, holding onto things just in case can quickly cause a problem, so it helps to be properly realistic about what you use on a daily or at least regular basis and what’s just sitting there.

Of course, you don’t have to get rid of everything all at once, but gradually letting some things go means you can actually make space and be more organised as well, so it’s worth trying.

Give Everything A Place

When space is limited, things need a proper home because if something doesn’t have a place, it tends to end up wherever there’s room at the time, and that’s how things start to feel cluttered.

It can be as simple as having a drawer for everyday items, for example, or perhaps a basket for loose bits, or maybe a shelf for specific things. And once everything’s got somewhere to go, it’s much easier to keep things tidy without having to work hard to make it happen.

Make Use Of Vertical Space

In smaller homes, walls are often underused, but with some shelving, hooks, and wall-mounted storage, for example, you can free up quite a bit of floor space and make rooms feel less full and crowded.

As a bonus, it means you can also keep things within reach and not have to take up loads of room just to make your home nice and convenient.

Rotate Items When You Need To

You don’t always need everything out at once, and things like seasonal items, extra bedding, or just things you only use occasionally can be stored away and swapped when you need them. That way, your living area stays more comfortable and practical, and you’ll have a safe place to keep everything.

If you don’t have space at home, using a storage unit can be a very handy option because it gives you somewhere to keep things without letting them get in the way and cause a problem, plus you know they’re secure behind a locked door and you can access them whenever you need.

Keep Surfaces As Clear As You Can

Surfaces just attract loads of clutter, especially in a busy home, but if you can keep them as clear as possible, it means the whole space can be a lot more organised, so it’s a good idea to try.

We’re not saying you’ve got to get rid of everything and have totally clear surfaces everywhere, but being a bit more selective about what stays out can be worthwhile.
