Are Electric Cars Safer to Drive

October 19, 2022 by admin Leave a Comment

If you are in the market for a new car and want a safe option for transporting your family from place to place, then an electric car might be worth considering. Electric cars have a lot of potential not only when it comes to reducing climate change and environmental harm, but also when it comes to keeping the roads safer. Road accidents are still one of the leading reasons for death and serious injury around the world today. Here are some of the main reasons why driving an electric car could help you reduce your risk on the road.

Take Longer Breaks When Driving

If you’re driving long-distance, it’s recommended to take a break every couple of hours to ensure that you are alert when you are back behind the wheel. While you might need to stop and refuel a traditional combustion engine car, this can be done in minutes, meaning that there’s not always any real reason to take a longer break. On the other hand, when you are charging an electric car mid-journey, you might have to wait a while for the battery to reach a charge level that will last you and make sure that you can get to where you need to be. More Sensors

While more sensors are being added for safety on traditional petrol and diesel engine cars too, the technology is definitely being rolled out more when it comes to electric cars. In fact, some electric cars have automatic systems including braking when an obstacle is sensed on the road in front of them, even if there is no input from the driver. Electric cars are often safer simply because they are more likely to be fully kitted out with the latest vehicle safety systems.

Less Flammable

While there are a lot of myths out there about electric cars being more likely to catch fire, the opposite is true. When it comes to catching fire, EVs are actually safer, and there is less chance of this happening. Compared to fires in petrol and diesel engine cars, EV fires are much rarer. Despite the batteries themselves being flammable, they will only catch fire when they have been exposed to dangerous conditions for a long time, or when they are damaged, leading to the power cells short-circuiting.

Improved Collision Resistance

Despite how safe you try to be on the road, sometimes accidents just can’t be avoided. You will be glad to hear that in these situations, tests have found that electric cars perform better and are safer. The chances of passengers in an EV being injured in a collision are lower, and EVs have high crash test safety ratings thanks to the external aluminium plating surrounding the battery. The front of EVs is designed to crumple upon impact, making them safer in a front-on crash.

When you are looking for a safe and reliable car for your family, it might be worth thinking about getting an electric car.
