Well, at first, storing business inventory at home can feel like a smart little money-saving move, right? It’s a fun motherhood venture; you’re learning a lot on the way. Plus, again, the finance aspect, you’re not having to pay for extra rent, no warehouse bill, no commute to deal with, and everything’s right there where it can be packed, counted, or shipped out.
And for a while, that setup can seem completely fine. Maybe even kind of ideal. But with that said, once kids are in the picture, that whole arrangement can start getting a lot less practical and a lot more stressful than people expect. Well, just family life in general, in all honesty, here. But what’s the whole problem here, though?
Kids Don’t See Inventory the Way Adults Do
And this is probably the most obvious issue, but it’s still the one people underestimate all the time. Sure, you might have great kids, but at the end of the day, here, kids are still just kids. So, adults see stacked boxes, extra product, packing supplies, labels, scissors, tape guns, maybe some breakable stock, and think, ” That’s business stuff, leave it alone. Now, that’s obvious; teens probably think similarly; however, kids don’t think like that.
Kids see climbing opportunities, things to pull, stuff to open, interesting little objects to grab, and boxes that look way too fun to ignore. Basically, they see a fun adventure here. Remember the Rugrats show? Well, that’s basically the perspective for a child here. So even if the inventory itself doesn’t seem dangerous at first glance, it can become a problem very quickly.
Seriously, think about it here: heavy boxes can tip, sharp tools can get left within reach, plastic wrapping can become a hazard, and fragile stock can end up smashed all over the floor. It only takes a second for your kid to get hurt.
Clutter Changes How a Home Feels
How? Well, a family home already has a lot going on, honestly, what family doesn’t at this point? You got the toys scattered everywhere in the house, laundry hanging up to dry basically everywhere, shoes, school stuff, random little messes that seem to appear out of nowhere, it’s already enough.
Oh, and add too much business inventory into that mix, and now the house starts feeling less like a home and more like a storage unit that happens to have children in it. Now, it sounds harsh, but that’s true. There’s so much already happening, you can’t just throw in your stuff for your business too, unless literally everything is in one room, like a home office closed off. Eventually, that overlap gets annoying to the point of arguments, which, of course, you need to avoid.
Too Much Stock Can Create Everyday Safety Problems
Well, it was subtle above, but basically, you need to keep the smaller day-to-day stuff in mind. So, it’s things like blocked walkways, overloaded shelves, unstable piles of boxes, things stored too low, things stored too high, all of that can make a house more awkward to move around in. And when kids are running, climbing, reaching, and getting into everything, awkward can turn into risky pretty quickly.
Again, giant hazard, giant annoyance, and again, it’s going to build up. So if you haven’t looked into it yet, you absolutely need to finally decide to invest some money and look into storage containers (like ones you can rent) for your business inventory. Alternatively, if you have extra space at home, like an attic, home office, cellar, or anywhere like that, you could look into that too.
