Thinking of taking a family trip to Wales? You’ve made a good choice as this part of the UK is made for families, thanks to its mix of stunning coastlines (complete with beautiful beaches), historic castles, friendly people, and exciting culture. To help you on your way, below you will find some tips to help you have a successful trip.

1. Stay Comfy

Accommodation is always the most important thing to think about when you are planning a trip, and luckily Wales has lots of stunning places to stay. For example, the Inn Collection Group offers family-friendly accommodations throughout Wales that is cosy, welcoming, and so quintessentially Welsh. Want something a bit different? The country is home to yurts, castles, treehouses, and more quirky accommodations than you can shake a stick at, so be sure to check out what’s available.

2. Embrace the Great Outdoors

Wales is a playground for nature lovers. From the sandy beaches of the Gower Peninsula to the towering peaks of Snowdonia, the great outdoors will call to you like a siren song (just with fewer shipwrecks). Don a sturdy pair of walking boots and take the family on a ramble through landscapes so stunning you’ll keep checking if you’ve wandered onto a film set.

3. Castle Quests

No trip to Wales is complete without visiting at least one castle. Kids (and let’s be honest, adults, too) will love exploring ancient ruins and imagining days of yore. Carreg Cennen, Caernarfon, and Conwy castles are just a few that offer a fascinating peek into the past and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore. Don’t forget to whisper about dragons—legend says there are a few still lurking!

4. Get Cultured

Dive into the rich tapestry of Welsh culture by attending a local Eisteddfod, a festival of literature, music and performance. Children will love the storytelling sessions, and you might even catch a male voice choir. It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience local traditions and maybe pick up a few words of Welsh—challenge the kids to say “Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch”!

5. Seaside Shenanigans

The Welsh coastline is dotted with family-friendly beaches where you can build sandcastles, paddle in the waves, or just enjoy a picnic. Barry Island offers classic seaside fun with amusements and ice cream aplenty, while Rhossili Bay gives you breathtaking beauty and a chance to run wild on its vast expanse of sand.

6. Discover Local Legends

Wales is a land woven with myths and legends. Visit the town of Beddgelert to hear the poignant tale of Gelert, the faithful hound, or search for the Lady of the Lake in the waters of Llyn y Fan Fach. These stories are not just entertaining; they’re a bridge to a mystical, magical past.

7. Sample the Scrumptious Eats

Welsh cuisine might not be famous worldwide, but it’s downright delicious. Treat the family to Welsh cakes, bara brith, and if you’re feeling brave, laverbread. Food is a fantastic way to connect with the local culture, and who knows? You might find yourselves craving cawl (Welsh soup) on your return home.

As you can see, a family trip to Wales is sure to be a trip filled with fun, adventure and lots of interesting new things to see and do. So give Wales a go, you’re unlikely to regret it!
