Making space

I know I say it ALL the time, but my house is a mess, and yes I know I have three children who love to play and make things, and I don’t actually mind the LEGO bricks scattered around or the shredded bits of paper all over the carpet, but what really stresses me out is cupboards bursting full of ‘stuff’. Stuff we hardly ever use, but can’t bear to throw out just in case.

Every so often we decide enough is enough and try really hard to be ruthless, but it’s hard to give away cake moulds used once for a special birthday, the Planet Hollywood glasses from our honeymoon or the giant cardboard box the girls have spent hours doodling and writing on.

I have boxes full of artwork, cute little drawings of people, rabbits and ‘I LOVE YOU’ messages that I just can’t bear to recycle, but my bursting house and inability to find something five seconds after putting it down meant that something had to be done, so last weekend I attacked our kitchen equipped with handy boxes kindly sent from Ecomovers. I was so surprised how having high quality boxes made the decluttering so much easier. Things either stayed in the cupboard, went into a box for storage, a box for the charity shop or the bin. Usually we just have everything all over the floor and then end up squeezing it back into the cupboards, so the boxes were a huge success.

Now I just need somewhere to put the boxes, maybe the garage? Although that requires decluttering first.

Are you a hoarder? Do you declutter regulary or continually procrastinate like me? I look around my house and honestly feel like I’d be so much happier and more productive if it wasn’t so cluttered, but I really don’t know how much more we can get rid of.

If you’re looking for handy decluttering or moving house tips, check out these brilliant infographics. I particularly like how decluttering can save you money and be good for your health. I really have no excuse do I?
