How to Encourage Your Children to Spend More Time Outside

November 12, 2020 by admin Leave a Comment

It is incredibly important for your kids to spend time in the outdoors, and yet many kids are not getting the outside playtime that they need to be healthy and happy. If your child is reluctant about the outdoors, whether they are afraid of bugs or hate the extreme weather, here are some of the top tips available on how to regularly entice your children into your garden and beyond.

Invest in a Pond

One of the top reasons why kids do not bother to go outside is that there is nothing of interest out there for them. However, by installing a pond within your garden, you will be ensuring that they do not have to go far to find something of interest outside of the home. Although small children should always be supervised by an adult, ponds can be incredibly exciting features for kids, whether they want to own pond fish or make crafts to decorate your new garden centrepiece. At Water Garden, their pond water features can encourage your kids to enjoy the outdoors and to have a reason to step off the patio more regularly.

Play Outdoor Games and Sports

Many children find their garden a boring place to be, with there being many more toys and games to enjoy indoors. Then, you should engage them outside of the house by playing outdoor games and sports with them, especially in summer. For instance, you should consider investing in chalk to draw pictures and hopscotch squares on your patio or investing in a net and rackets to play tennis or badminton. You could also consider building them a Wendy house within your garden, or encouraging them to build an outdoor den or to play hide and seek until dark.

You could also consider investing in gadgets for your kids to have fun with outside. For instance, scooters, bikes, e-scooters, and hoverboards are all popular with kids and can help them to enjoy a new experience outside.

Limit Their Screen Time

Kids spend an average of six or more hours a day on screens, and this can interfere with their ability to remain physically fit and active, as well as interrupting other important tasks, such as homework and learning. To get them into the garden more often, you should limit their screen time. You can do this by using the parental controls on your children’s devices, only allowing them to go on a device at a certain time of day, or making sure that they do not have their own electronic device.

Take Them on Outdoor Excursions

The outdoors is much larger than your garden, though. If your kid does not spend enough time outside like many other children their age, you should attempt to kindle a love for the outdoors within them by taking them to exciting places in your local area. For instance, kids are more likely to fall in love with a beach or a forest than the square of grass at the back of your house.
