The Small Things That Help Us Remember the Good Stuff

Life moves very quickly, and most of the time we don’t realise certain moments were important ones until they’ve already happened. That’s because it’s not usually the big things that we might assume would be the memorable ones, but instead it tends to be little things that are one offs and were wonderful at the time. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the small things that help us remember the good stuff.

We Forget More Than We Think

You don’t actually realise how much time slips away until enough time passes, and then when you think back, you’ll notice that some of the details are missing (like the way someone’s voice sounded, for example, or the routines you used to do that you don’t anymore for some reason). It might even be that there were whole periods of your life that seemed important at the time, but that you can barely remember now, at least not in detail.

That’s probably why people start holding onto little things more as they get older because they know exactly how quickly ordinary moments can disappear. Of course, you might worry that holding onto these things means you’ll end up living in the past, but that’s not the case – it’s just a way to remember the good times a bit more easily.

Photos Are More Important Later On

Most people take hundreds of photos without really looking at them again properly – they just sit on phones for months or years until something reminds you they’re there or you feel like you need to get some information about a certain time or event.

But every now and then you’ll come across one unexpectedly and it catches you off guard a bit because it reminds you of something you totally forgot. The best ones are the ones where everyone looks like themselves, and you see little details you might not have thought about before, and it basically brings back something you hadn’t thought about for years.

That’s part of why working with a family photographer can be a good idea because you’ll be able to capture lovely images of a version of life that actually happened, and those are the things that become so important as time goes by.

Ordinary Things Are Important

The strange thing is, the things that might seem to be the most forgettable are generally the ones you miss the most when they’re not there anymore. That might be things like a bit of mess because there are people in the house, or conversations, or dozing on the sofa in the sun, and so on.

At the time it all just feels normal and ordinary, but later on you’ll realise it was a big part of your life, and although you won’t be able to capture it perfectly, trying to write down how it makes you feel could be a useful exercise if you ever want to go back and think about it in years to come.

Final Thoughts

Most of us spend a lot of time worrying about whether we’re doing enough to make memories, but the fact is that memory doesn’t really work like that, and it’s good to hold onto the small things because they’re the ones that are going to mean the most.
