You may be considering putting your house on the market, or perhaps you just want to give your property a facelift. Either way, if you want to increase your home’s kerb appeal, there are plenty of things you can do, and not all have to cost a fortune.
Tidy your garden
One of the most effective and inexpensive ways that you can increase your home’s kerb appeal is to tidy up the garden. Making sure the grass is cut regularly, hedges are trimmed, and flower borders are weeded can create an instantly revitalised look for your home.
Don’t forget the path either. Weed between paving stones and get out the pressure washer to give your path a refresh and remove any moss. If you have children make sure to provide a storage bin where they can put away any outdoor toys at the end of the day.
Improve your boundary
The boundary to your property, whether it’s a hedge, wall or fence should be well maintained to ensure kerb appeal. If your fence is looking tired give it a new coat of paint or preservative. If it is in bad condition, then you should consider replacing it. Not only does this look better but it increases the security of your property. Make sure any gates work properly and don’t forget to give them a coat of paint too.
If you have walls rather than fencing, a jet wash will remove grime, dirt and moss. Replace any loose mortar or missing coping stones, and remove any ivy clinging to your garden wall, which can damage it over time.
Install a new front door
The front door to your home is an important focal point, so it should be in good condition. Wooden doors can be refreshed with a new paint colour, while uPVC and composite doors can be spruced up with specialist cleaning products.
If your front door has seen better days then a replacement may be necessary not only for appearance’s sake but also for the security of your home. New front door costs will depend on the material that the door is made from with uPVC being the least expensive and hardwood the most costly. You want your front door to be strong, thermally efficient and durable so it is more of an investment than a mere replacement.
Refresh your home’s exterior
With a shiny new front door in place, the exterior of your home may appear a little lacklustre in comparison. If the exterior walls are looking jaded clean the brickwork or give the external walls a new coat of paint.
Take a look at the condition of your guttering and downpipes to make sure they are functioning properly and are in a good state of repair. Leaking rainwater goods can cause staining and dampness on your external walls, so it’s important to keep them well-maintained. Soffits and fascias are often neglected areas, so make a point of cleaning or repainting them.
Add some external lighting
Garden and external lights add a welcoming touch to any home and are practical for safety and security. Strategic lighting can highlight certain features of your home while solar-powered LED lights along a path provide a well-lit route to your front door.
As well as creating a sense of security external lighting can enhance your property’s kerb appeal when it complements the style and character of your home.
