BMW i3
This fully electric car removes all need for fuel and therefore refrains from kicking out any nasty emissions while navigating the roads. It’s one of the first good looking fully electric cars and offers a realistic 80-100 miles before needing a charge – but if you do regular longer journeys you can opt for a range extender version of the vehicle which will stop the batteries from running flat. The BMW i3 is a great leasing car option because it does come at a steep price – £25,000 after a £5,000 Government grant to help purchase it.
Hyundai Ioniq
This more affordable hybrid is a popular choice for families looking to embrace being a little greener, and is also eligible for the Government grant. The Ioniq can travel 174 miles on a charge and its ‘regenerative’ braking feature uses the kinetic energy created while applying the brakes and transfers this to the battery to continuously charge it. For those who drive carefully expect to enjoy 83.1mpg – but the Ioniq can reach speeds of 62pmh in 10.8 seconds, if you’re in a hurry.
Nissan Leaf
Many eco friendly cars are small in size, because this has less impact on the fuel consumption and drag of the vehicle while out on the road but the Nissan Leaf is a hatchback that offers plenty of room, while still being small enough to squeeze into that parking space in the multi storey while trying to calm your toddler in the back.
The all electric model has a maximum range of 124 miles on a charge and Nissan claims it should only cost an additional £260 on your yearly energy bill to keep the car topped up – which can be a huge saving compared to petrol and diesel costs and fill ups. The Leaf is now considered to be the world’s best selling electric car, with 180,000 models sold.
We’re still not quite trusting of electric cars yet, but as fuel stations become more accommodating of them and the prices come down we should see more and more of these environmentally friendly vehicles on the road.
