Do you love to grow flowers, plants and even fruit and vegetables but don’t have much space? I’ve got some great tips today to help make the most of even the smallest gardening spaces.
Organise and Plan
If you only have a balcony garden planning is even more important as you probably want somewhere to sit and admire your plants as well as grow lots of lovely things!
Think about which parts of your garden area get the most light and the type of plants you want to grow. Check out compact or foldaway garden furniture and perhaps a garden tower growing system to make the most of the space.
Easy to grow plants
Salad items are some of the easiest to grow plants. Our radishes were brilliant last year, as was our spinach.
Potatoes grown in potato sacks are another space saver and a an easy way to grow something very useful in a small space. Remember potatoes do take a long time to grow though, so make sure you’re happy to have the sack around for that long!
Runner beans are great if you can train them to grow up a frame, perhaps on a wall or even the balcony itself!
Herbs are usually pretty hardy, can be grown in small pots and are a bit of greenery all year round.
Hanging baskets and window boxes
Hanging baskets and/or window boxes are a fantastic way to utilise all the space you have and perfect for growing vegetables or herbs!
One important thing to think about with window boxes and hanging baskets is watering them. As the amount of soil they hold is limited and so is the amount of water. You’ll need to water them frequently or maybe consider some kind of drip line. Herbs are a great choice for a window box and will save you a fortune buying them from the supermarket!

If you’re on a budget
Remember you don’t always need expensive items, plants can be grown in almost anything. Cans, old wellies, watering cans or even old laundry baskets can be used to grow plants.
