For a lot of people, the garden often turns into a pretty underutilised space. It can look alright – some grass, a few plants dotted around, but there’s nothing drawing you outside that makes you want to spend time out there. With a few practical tweaks, you can turn your garden from a space you just maintain into a place you actually want to use and enjoy. Below we’ll go through some simple ideas that can help you get more out of your garden.

Build or Extend A Patio

It can be tricky to do anything with your garden if the entire space is just grass and plants. Not only is it a lot to maintain, but it also gives you very little to work with if you want to utilise the space better. Similarly, if you’ve only got a small row on slabs down, there’s not much you can really do. Adding or extending a patio can solve this. It gives you a lot more workable space to add things like BBQ’s, seating, pools and so much more.

With additional things you can do with the space and the easier outdoor maintenance, it’s a bit of a no-brainer. You could either rely on patio installers for a more professional result or even have a go yourself if you’re feeling up to it.

Add A Garden Shed

It can be tricky looking after a garden, especially if you have nowhere to keep equipment and tools. It’ll put you off wanting to maintain it, and then you just won’t want to go outside. If it’s storage you need to consider building a shed. They are great for storing everything you need to maintain your garden, as well as hiding additional clutter like bikes, pots and tools. The better able you are to look after your garden, the more likely you’ll want to go into it and enjoy the space.

Put Up A Pergola or Covered Area

The obvious problem with wanting to use your garden all the time is that you end up being limited by the weather. In the UK, it feels like it’s raining 90% of the time, so it’s not often you can go out and enjoy your outside space. That’s why adding in a pergola or covered area is game-changing.

Not only will you gain cover from the rain, but also shade when it’s piping hot on that rare boiling summer day we get once a year. Adding cover means you can utilise your garden and make being outside much more enjoyable, even when the weather isn’t perfect.

Create Some Flower Beds

If you want your garden to feel like it has more going on but also want a more practical use for it, think about creating some flower beds. They’re one of the easiest ways to make your garden look more cared for, but also are incredibly useful if you choose to grow things like fruit and veg in them that you can grow, pick and enjoy later on. It really increases your garden’s overall practicality and looks good at the same time.

Making your garden more usable doesn’t mean it has to go through an expensive overhaul. Just a few simple, practical tweaks are all that’s needed to transform your garden into a space you want to be in
