How to protect children on smartphones

My eldest child is now 10. I have tried very hard so far to limit his use of any type of screen and smart device which hasn’t made me very popular. However, we have had to relent slightly and give him a phone to use at swimming in case he needs to contact us.  Up until this point I have supervised all his time on the internet, so we haven’t set up any controls at all, which I need to change.

He also wants to have his own YouTube account which has made me think about how to keep him safe on social media. My instinct is to ban social media accounts until he is much older, but the infographic below made me think that rather than a flat out ban, perhaps educating him how to use them safely would be a more sensible approach.
