As a mum, you’ll quite often realize that your time is never really your own. At least, not anymore. Because when you have children, they will often come before you. And if you have a sweetheart in your life, you may also find yourself putting their needs above your own too. Because that’s just what we all tend to do when we love someone. And it can be hard. You really want to be able to live well and feel happy in life, but you have so many responsibilities and things to do, that you don’t always get to put yourself first.

However, when you’re constantly in this position, it can be damaging. Because not only may you be neglecting your own health and happiness, but you may find that you grow resentful. And that, in itself, is not healthy either. So, from here, you have to make sure that you are thinking about the ways in which you can be happy. And that you can start to do a few things for yourself. You might not be able to completely put your wants and needs first, but you can start looking after them a bit better.
So it’s time for you to bump them up the ladder a little. Instead, of never doing anything for you, or taking care of what you need, you’re going to. And you can definitely start small or go as big as you want here. Let’s take a look at fifteen ways that you can make this happen.
- Wake Up An Hour Earlier
First of all, one of the things that you can do for yourself, is to wake up one hour earlier. Because if you need a little time to yourself, and you want to have more energy, then getting that extra hour in the morning is going to really help you to do both. Being up and awake an hour before everyone else in the house is such a luxury and it can help you to set the tone for the day ahead.
- Take A Bath
Now, something small that you can do for yourself here, is run a bath and just enjoy it. If you can get your partner to watch the kids for an hour, or if you do this when they’re in bed, you get to relax, have some quiet time to yourself and indulge in this way.
- Start A Book
Another really small thing that you could do that’s going to help you here, is to pick up a new book. Or start a new book series. And there are always a ton of different books to read that are being released each month. So think about giving yourself thirty minutes or an hour in the evening, before bed, to enjoy diving into a new novel. This can also help you to sleep better too.

From here, it could be something as simple as starting to exercise. Because if you do not work out and move your body, it will affect your health and your energy levels. So if you want to make sure that you are energized and feeling good, doing an at-home workout or yoga from youtube or joining a running group can help you.
- Start A New Hobby
If you think that you’re not really enjoying your life, or that you’re stuck in a rut, then you might want to turn to your hobbies. Do you have hobbies? Or do you want to find a new hobby that you could try out? You might find that trying something new, for an hour or so a week, is going to really help you to feel grounded and fulfilled.
- Learn Something New
Or maybe you really miss nurturing your mind? Do you feel as if you really want to learn something, that you want to grow, that you want to top up your skills or knowledge, then why not sign up for a course? You could even turn to something such as Aston University Online to get a professional qualification. Or it could be something smaller, like learning French, that you’ve always wanted to do.
- Work On Your Career
From here, you might even want to work on your career too. Because you can be a mum and have a career too. So think about what you might need to do to boost your career or move yourself forward with your work. Maybe you even want to take those new things that you’ve learned and make a huge career change.
- Follow A Dream
Or maybe you’ve had a dream in your mind for what feels like forever? Have you always wanted to do one set thing? Have you always wished that you could become a writer or that you could help a charity or that you could start a business? If you have, then why not work on this? In a few hours a day or a bit of time here and there, you could quite easily start to make your dreams happen. And this could be exactly what you need.
- Set A Goal For Yourself
Or maybe you want to set a goal for yourself. Do you want to lose weight or write something, go to a certain location or just do anything at all? Then set that goal for yourself. No matter how small or big it is, it could be something that makes you feel as if you’re doing something just for you.
- Meet Up With Friends
And who doesn’t feel good when they’re around friends? If you know that you just don’t see your girlfriends enough, then this is what you need to do. Make a date, go get coffee, and let off some steam!

- Go On A Date Night
Now this one is kind of for you, but also for your partner and your relationships too. Because it can be important for you to think about going on a date night with your spouse. Date nights are so important for your relationship. They help you to keep things strong, and to give you some valuable time to yourself. So where you can, look to try and get some time together and head out on a date night. If you can make this a regular thing – even better!
- Get In Shape
If you are not happy with your body, then this could be the one thing that you do for yourself. Think about the healthy lifestyle changes that you might need to make in order to feel healthier and stronger. Work on feeding your body, moving your body, improving your mental outlook, and generally loving the skin that you are in.
- Save For Something
Something that can be really fun, is to start saving. But this isn’t just about putting a bit of money away here and there for a rainy day. It’s more about starting to save for something big. Something that you’ve always wanted. Something that you really want. Because this is something just for you. Sure, make sure that your bills are paid first, but then think about what you can do to put money aside so that you’re able to get something, just for you.
- Go On A Mini Break
But then it could be that you just need a break. And maybe taking a holiday isn’t going to work for you right now. But a mini break could. You could take a day or two off and away from your everyday life, you will find that this will help you to feel recharged.
- Live Intentionally
And finally, this last point may seem a little odd at first, but it’s something very small that you can do every single day, to really change your life. Because we don’t always live intentionally. We live on autopilot. Yet if you start to be more present, more positive, and look for the good in your everyday life, you’ll be living with more intention. And this is going to help you to feel happier every single day and get more out of your life.
So there you have it. Sometimes, it’s easy to think that you need to have to put others above you at all times. And that if you’re trying to do something for yourself that you’re selfish. But that’s just not the case. Because this is your life. And you deserve to be happy and get what you want out of it. And if you’re completely doting on your children and doing everything for them, you’re not going to be raising them to be self-sufficient. So it’s healthy for you to take a step back for a short while and do something for yourself.
And as you can see, doing something for yourself doesn’t have to to be something big or bold or difficult. It can be a small gesture or a simple pleasure that makes all of the difference.
