A weekend of Sandwiches #KingsmillGreatWhite

June 2, 2014 by admin 15 Comments

I have to admit that I’m not the biggest fan of white bread. As a household we generally eat wholemeal.

My 7 year old devours a sandwich faster than it takes me to make it, while my girls pick the insides out and leave the crusts. It can be very frustrating, especially as they are then hungry an hour later.  Just last week little S asked if for a special treat she could have white bread sandwiches in her school dinners once a week. She asked me so nicely I couldn’t say no. My main concern with white bread is the lack of fibre which I think is important for little ones.

Luckily for little S Kingsmill have a new loaf of white bread which contains more fibre per 100g than their wholemeal loaf. We bought a pack of Kingsmill Great White to see how it measured up.

I took the opportunity to try and get a bit more creative with the kids lunches, while my husband enjoyed making some more extravagant that usual sandwiches for himself.

My first attempt was a space scene, the actual sandwiches are just ham and peanut butter, as my children don’t like much salad on the inside a sandwich.

I  was a little more adventurous on Sunday with these butterfly and rabbit creations. The ladybirds are cherry tomatoes with black icing ( not the healthiest, I know ).

My problem then was how to use up the leftover crusts, so poor Z had everyone else’s leftovers, but then said it was the best lunch EVER!!!

The grown ups of the house had yummy pastrami, tomato, cambozola, red onion and mustard mayonnaise followed by ham, egg, tomato, lettuce and mayonnaise.

What did we think?

The kids loved the chance to have white bread, and I’m definitely happy to give them Kingsmill Great White as an alternative to wholemeal knowing that they’re still getting the same about of fibre.

Little S has requested rabbit lunches every day, so I think I’m going to have to make a bit more effort with my packed lunches.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our sandwiches, I think my personal preference is wholemeal bread, but I’d still buy Kingsmill Great White again for a change.

We were sent a £40 voucher to buy Kingsmill Great White and Sandwich ingredients.

We had this recently – GG was absoutely made up to tell me that she could now have her favourite white toast with butter treat more often because it was healthy. I’m still not sure how they do it – must read the ingredients, but fibre’s good I guess. As for crusts, dry them out and blitz them in the blender to make breadcrumbs. I have a bag full in the freezer 🙂

Loving your creative lunches, they are fab!

Does this bread stick to the roof of your mouth like most white bread? That’s what puts me off!

We never have white bread either! I buy it as a special treat when Splosh comes home, Personally I prefer the taste of wholemeal or granary, but maybe we’ll give this is a try!

I am not a fan of white bread either but there are times when nothing but a white bread sandwich will do. Really fresh soft bread with salad cream and cheese. Yummy

Though your pictures here are brillian!

My little one would love your space themed sandwiches. I love thick white bread for bacon sandwiches and this would be a really healthy alternative.

I love your creations, so fab! Makes me think I must make more effort with presentation. I prefer wholemeal too, but I love buttered white toast and tea when I am ill, or when its a crap day. I will never forget the toast they brought me after both kids were born, best toast ever!

Ohhhh, I miss sandwiches so much. I’ve given up bread entirely recently because it was making me feel a bit rubbish. But like you, I have a boy (and a husband!) who prefer white bread to anything with seeds or grains in it, so this would be perfect for them. x
